Let $R$ be a ring, let $M$ be an $R$-module and let $N$ be a submodule of $M$. The (additive, abelian) quotient group $M/N$ can be made into an $R$-module by defining $r(x+N)=(rx)+N$, for all $r\in R$, $x+N\in M/N$.
